Caroline McCulley, MD

Dr. Caroline McCulley is a second generation rheumatologist who was raised near Portland, Oregon. She graduated magna cum laude (with high honors) with a BA degree in English Literature from Santa Clara University. She spent a year living in South Africa working on various public health projects, which solidified her desire to become a physician. She returned to Portland and worked for a year as a patient advocate, and then went to medical school at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). She completed internal medicine residency at Providence Portland Medical Center and returned to OHSU to pursue rheumatology fellowship. During rheumatology training, in addition to the daily clinical care of patients, Dr. McCulley did research in how obesity affects treatment in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, learned the use of ultrasound in musculoskeletal medicine, and sought additional training in osteoporosis diagnosis and management. She is a member of an American College of Rheumatology subcommittee, which enables her to work with a national team to affect broader policies and considerations that impact rheumatologists and patients with rheumatic conditions across the country. Dr. McCulley enjoys caring for patients with a wide spectrum of rheumatologic and musculoskeletal conditions. She feels privileged to work with patients over years to help them live the healthiest and most functional life possible, taking into account how psychosocial factors, education, nutrition, and physical activity impact one’s overall wellness.
In her free time, she loves to run, hike, ski, snowshoe, read, cook, and explore new places with her husband, John, and their dog, Polly. She is excited to join the Deschutes Rheumatology family as well as the Bend community!
