COVID-19 Prevention and Expectations

Due to the increase cases of Covid-19 and the new travel restrictions, for anyone that has travelled outside of Oregon, we cannot have you come into the office for 14 days since your 1st day back in Oregon. Also, if you have been diagnosed with Covid-19 or were exposed to someone with Covid-19, you will be unable to come into the office for 14 days and have a negative test following your quarantine.
We are now changing the in-person visits to Telehealth/Telemedicine visits including those new patients with Osteoporosis. Most new patients, and any patient that has an urgent problem that requires a physical exam, will be seen in the office as long as the exposure to Covid-19 does not prevail. For the patients receiving infusion and/or injection therapies, please contact the office prior to coming in and confirming your exposure to Covid-19.
For everyone coming into the office, wearing a mask or face covering over your nose and
mouth is mandatory. If you do not have a mask, the office will provide one for you. Face shields are not acceptable. Upon entering the office, you will have your temperature checked and ask that you use a squirt of the hand sanitizer before going into the back office. To minimize the exposure of the virus, we are asking all visitors to remain outside of the office. If a visitor must accompany the patient to the office, their temperature will also be checked along with their needing to apply hand sanitizer.

We at Deschutes Rheumatology want to give you an update on our thoughts regarding the Covid-19 vaccines which have been recently approved and are being administered for emergency use in the United States. The information on these vaccines is changing rapidly and you may want to check back in the event that our knowledge and recommendations might change.
The preparations manufactured by Pfizer and Moderna have shown to be highly effective as well as safe in most patient groups. It is our recommendation that all patients should receive one of the vaccines unless you are in a high-risk group due to severe allergic reactions, an unstudied group such as pregnancy, or unless you have some specific contraindication. If you have questions about this, we would refer you to your primary care physician but we would recommend your receiving the vaccine regardless of your rheumatologic disease or treatment.
We will not be administering the vaccine in our office. We do not know which groups of patients will be prioritized over others although front-line medical personnel will be the first eligible group, and they will be followed by patients in long-term nursing facilities. The Pfizer vaccine will need to be given at St. Charles Medical Center due to the extreme cold storage requirements, which only a medical facility can provide. The Moderna vaccine may be ultimately available at other medical providers' offices or pharmacies. It is important that you receive both injections in the series if two (2) are recommended.
